Learn about African and Latin American organizations that are working to improve the experiences of queer migrants in the Global South, and to expand education on queer migration


The organizations listed below have in some way created/participated in events, projects, research, etc. involving queer migration within the Global South:

Africa

The African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS): ACMS defines itself as “…Africa’s leading scholarly institution for research and teaching on human mobility dedicated to shaping global discourse on human mobility and social transformation.”

The Refugee Law Project (RLP): RLP’s mission is to “…empower asylum seekers, refugees, deportees, IDPs and host communities to enjoy their human rights and lead dignified lives” in Uganda.

The African LGBTQI+ Migration Research Network (ALMN): The goal of ALMN is to “…advance scholarship on LGBTQI+ migration on, from and to the African continent.”

Migration Gender Health Systems (MiGHS): MiGHS is a research collaboration that works to address “…the impacts of and response to migration and its intersection with gender” in South Africa.

Latin America

Irca Casabierta: Irca Casabierta, or the Institute on Migration and LGBTIQ Refugee for Central America, is a non-profit NGO that was created “…in response to the needs of migrant LGBTIQ people, applicants and in refugee status in Costa Rica, mainly from the Central American Region.”

Federación Argentina LGBT (FALGBT): FALGBT works to “…promote equality and non-discrimination towards lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans” in Argentina.
