Contrary to the Global South, the Global North has been more proactive in passing LGBTQ+ friendly policies. The Netherlands<\/a> spearheaded the new millennia by being the first country to legalize same-sex marriage, with Northern Ireland being the latest Global North country to legalize same-sex marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With much progress in the Global North, there still are regions that are actively against LGBTQ+ policies. Most prominently in Eastern and Southern Europe. Italy recently elected a right-wing government in 2022. The new prime minister Giorgia Meloni, and her Brothers of Italy party, have roots to Benito Mussolini<\/a> and have denounced LGBT policies, and are actively reversing LGBTQ+ rights<\/a> and equality. We’ve seen governments engage in campaigns to restrict LGBTQ+ rights. Recently, the United States has seen a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ policies<\/a> mainly in southern and central states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can infer from the maps that, although there is decriminalization of same-sex sexual acts and the advancement of protections against discrimination, there are regions in the Global North that still do not have general acceptance of LGBT people in their societies. Though there may be legal protections in place to avoid discrimination of LGBT people, enforcement of these protections is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
