This is done through conferences, protests, and boycotts. Considering that countries in the Global South are not the safest place to openly express one\u2019s sexuality, we should pay special attention to collaborations that organizations based in the Global South are able to lead and participate in. This page includes details summaries of some of these collaborations that have occurred in the past. Though many collaborations were led by Global North organizations and activists, they are not included in this map. Additionally, large conferences such as NEDWA do not explicitly revolve around Pinkwashing. However, they are held and attended by the leading organizations in the anti-Pinkwashing fight and thus Pinkwashing is likely mentioned. Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/quitpalestine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">QUIT<\/a>!), a US-based LGBT organization, issued statements to promote the boycott. With their help, Aswat and Helem were able to collaborate and issue their own statements. World Pride is a global event that is meant to bring together sexual minorities. Holding it in Jerusalem with the theme &#8220;love without borders&#8221; is ironic, considering the existence of the apartheid wall built by Israeli and the human rights violations that they commit in Jerusalem, the city known for being the heart of the conflict.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><a href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/content\/call-boycott-world-pride-jerusalem-2006\/519\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"483\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/world-pride-jerusalem_001-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-175 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/world-pride-jerusalem_001-1.jpg 483w, https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/world-pride-jerusalem_001-1-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center has-background has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f694f469\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-lexend-font-family has-x-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe theme of the event is &#8220;love without borders,&#8221; which is particularly ironic given that this city was initially declared by the UN in 1947 to be an international zone. Israel occupied half of it in 1948, and the other half in 1967 and has annexed the entire city, despite UN resolutions. Walls and soldiers form a very strong border that is often insurmountable to Palestinians.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>&#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20050206133650\/http:\/\/www.quitpalestine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">QUIT!<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230106005838\/https:\/\/www.aswatgroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aswat<\/a>, the Palestinian Feminist Center for Gender and Sexual Freedoms, is a local nonprofit organization. It was established in 2003, making it the first Palestinian LGBT organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helem.net\/\">Helem<\/a> is the first LGBT rights organization in the Arab world. It was officially established in Beirut, Lebanon in 2001 and has continuously supported Palestinian queers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Protest\">Protest USSF 2010<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\">Pinkwashing can also be fought by protesting events that intentionally or unintentionally endorse it. The United States Social Forum is an annual gathering of social justice activists. USSF 2010 was held in Detroit, Michigan. Unfortunately, one of the many planned workshops, titled \u201cLGBTQI Liberation in the Middle East,\u201d was to be held by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standwithus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">StandWithUs<\/a> (SWU), a right-wing Zionist Israeli advocacy organization. According to an organizer\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/incite-national.org\/2010\/08\/02\/reflections-from-detroit-standoff-with-standwithus\/\" target=\"_blank\">reflection<\/a> on the protest, SWU falsely presented itself as anti-racist and non-violent to get its workshop approved. This alarmed Arab queers, and four Arab LGBT organizations responded with a letter, titled \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mronline.org\/2010\/06\/16\/arab-queers-say-no-to-pinkwashing-at-the-ussf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arab Queers Say NO to Pinkwashing at the USSF.<\/a>\u201d These four groups were Aswat, Helem, Al-Qaws, and Palestinian Queers for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (PQBDS). Initially, the USSF organizers refused to cancel the workshop due to fears of losing NGO funding. Fortunately, due to the persistence of pro-Palestinian groups, the SWU workshop was canceled one day before USSF began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-style-shadow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/USSFPost-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/USSFPost-1.png 674w, https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/USSFPost-1-300x90.png 300w, https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/USSFPost-1-600x181.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/alqaws.org\/siteEn\/index\" target=\"_blank\">Al-Qaws<\/a> is a grassroots Jerusalem-based queer Palestinian political organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160221122417\/http:\/\/www.pqbds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PQBS <\/a>is is a group of Palestinian queer activists who live in the Palestinian Occupied Territory and inside Israel, who came together to promote and stand for the Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Conference\">World Social Forum: Free Palestine 2012<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-9 wp-block-paragraph\">Another way to spread the word and fight Israel\u2019s Pinkwashing was found through attending conferences. In 2012, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210501110100\/https:\/\/www.pinkwatchingisrael.com\/portfolio\/world-social-forum-free-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Social Forum: Free Palestine<\/a> was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This global event was dedicated to Palestinians and served as a public space to show solidarity with them. It was organized by Palestinian and Brazilian committees and was held from November 28th to December 1st.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Join us for the World Social Forum Free Palestine!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C8wQoUfjwGc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Palestinian LGBT organizations attended the \u201cQueer Visions at the World Social Forum Free Palestine &#8221; conference, including Al-Qaws, Palestinian Queers for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, and Pinkwatching Israel. Activists from Nasawiya (Lebanon), Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (Canada), Palestine Solidarity Campaign (UK), and Safra Project (UK) also participated.<span style=\"font-size: revert; background-color: var(--wp--preset--color--white); color: var(--wp--preset--color--tertiary); font-family: var(--wp--preset--font-family--inter); font-weight: var(--wp--custom--font-weight--regular);\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full is-style-rounded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210501110100\/https:\/\/www.pinkwatchingisrael.com\/portfolio\/world-social-forum-free-palestine\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/projectaros.net\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Queer-Visions-featured-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-228\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color has-x-small-font-size wp-elements-10 wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210427174601\/http:\/\/www.pinkwatchingisrael.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pinkwatching Israel<\/a> was launched in 2010 as a hub for information sharing on Brand Israel. It now works to create a global movement to promote queer-powered calls against pinkwashing and pushing the Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment Campaign against Israel to the forefront of the global queer movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"India-Kashmir\">India and Kashmir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-11 wp-block-paragraph\">The three examples mentioned are all concerned with Israeli Pinkwashing&#8217;s effect on Palestine. Unfortunately, this is not the only country that participates in Pinkwashing. It is simply the case of Pinkwashing that is addressed most frequently while other cases often go unmentioned. For example, the Indian government used Pinkwashing as one of its many justifications for it to rule over Kashmir. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theasiadialogue.com\/2019\/08\/14\/yet-another-assault-on-kashmir\/\" target=\"_blank\">Article 370<\/a> of the Constitution of India granted autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir (J&amp;K) under the Indian Union. In 2019, J&amp;K lost their special status when <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-49234708\" target=\"_blank\">Article 370 was removed<\/a>. Many of those who argue in favor of the removal of Article 370 claim that this would provide queer Kashmiris with freedom. This is because homosexuality was decriminalized in India in 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-12 wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theasiadialogue.com\/2019\/08\/28\/homonationalism-pinkwashing-and-the-question-of-queer-kashmir\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sohini Chatterjee<\/a>, this is considered Pinkwashing as a result of Homonationalism because the Indian government deems queers worthy of protection as long as they assimilate and comply. Consequently, homophobia within India goes unaddressed. Queer Kashmiris are expected to comply with India&#8217;s nationalistic goals of making Kashmir a Hindu nation. India takes on a modern and inclusive appearance while Dalits, Muslims, Adivasis, and sex workers are still marginalized. Those who support the removal of Article 370 also fail to mention that Kashmir&#8217;s Constitution never criminalized homosexuality and that the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newframe.com\/kashmirs-invisible-lgbtqia-community\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indian apex court&#8217;s decisions already applied to J&amp;K<\/a> before they lost their autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top is-style-shadow-media\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-13 wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2019, a conference titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/southasiasolidarity.org\/event-video-resisting-fascism-building-solidaritiesindia-kashmir-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resisting Fascism, Building Solidarities, India Kashmir and Beyond<\/a>&#8221; was held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. They were to discuss India&#8217;s rise in fascism and appropriation of LGBT+ identities to meet political and financial gains and the lockdown of Kashmir after its loss of special status. It was held by the South Asia Solidarity Group (SASG) and attended by the Kashmir Solidarity Movement and Madaniya &#8211; Sudan Diaspora Global. There were activists from Palestine, Sudan, and India. The first session was interrupted by a group of masked students who claimed to be defenders of LGBTQ rights.
